Since 1911, Mount Merici Academy has been cultivating the character, education, and development of every student at our school. Our faculty and administration work to nurture our young students in ways that help them to become hard-working, service-minded members of the community. At Mount Merici, our approach to education extends beyond academic excellence. With the Ursuline focus on service over self, students are hardwired for lasting connection and contribution.
Mount Merici Academy alumni are consistently leaders in high school and college, in their communities, and in their places of employment. They are consistently found to be significant contributors to good service in the world, because their Serviam hearts, born at Mount Merici, never leave them. Coaches, professors, other parents, and employers regularly tell us that Mount Merici Academy graduates stand out as students, as athletes, as leaders, and as good stewards in their communities.
Mount Merici Academy is an Ursuline Catholic school. As such, it is uniquely governed by a lay Board of Trustees under the guidance of the Ursuline Sisters of the Central Province. It receives no financial support from the Diocese of Portland or from any local parish.
Our Mission
Mount Merici Academy, a Catholic school, is dedicated to nurturing the whole child - mind, body, and spirit - providing love and guidance so that students can achieve their personal best. In partnership with families, our mission is to instill the values of respect, responsibility, and self-discipline, teaching students in the Ursuline Serviam tradition of service to our community and the world.
Ursuline Educational Mission:
At the heart of Ursuline education is the Gospel call to mission and the living spirit of St. Angela Merici, foundress of the Ursuline Sisters. Grounded in this call and in this spirit, Ursuline education is relationship-centered, with attentiveness to and respect for the unique gifts, potential, and needs of each individual. It is an educational vision that fosters the development of the whole person – spirit, mind, and body – in a nurturing community environment. As Jesus and St. Angela were both attuned to the needs of those around them, Ursuline education seeks to form servant-leaders, open to and engaged in the ever-changing global reality in which they are called to live and serve
Faith
At Mount Merici Academy we begin and end our days with school prayer, and our students learn about the importance of faith – in God, in ourselves, and in one another. We follow the modeling of St. Angela and the Ursuline Sisters, encouraging and welcoming students of all religions and faiths to become part of our Mount Merici Family and to openly share in our collective spiritual enrichment.
Mount Merici Academy is an Ursuline Catholic school offering age-appropriate faith education. We encourage our students to share aspects of their faiths with us in an effort to find our common ground. The Ursuline Sisters and Mount Merici Academy have open hearts, open arms, and open doors to those of all faiths, believing that it is paramount that we embrace one another with love, focusing on that which unites us, rather than on that which divides us.
Academics
Our students’ Stanford Achievement Test scores are consistently higher than the national average. Historically, the median test scores are a full four grade levels ahead of their peers. Mount Merici Academy is also accredited by the highly esteemed New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).
Enrichment
Mount Merici’s “Serviam” foundation creates good stewards in the world who cultivate a lifelong dedication to service in their communities, and in the world at large.
Whether they are collecting food to benefit the local Weekend Backpack Program or contributing their own money to the Rice Bowl Program, we help our youngest students understand their compassion and effort makes a difference.
Our 6th and 7th grade students work diligently every week at the area soup kitchen, food bank, the Muskie Center for elders and disabled adults, and on a multitude of other service projects.
Drawing from their service work background, our eighth graders create a year-long, service-based project that aligns with their individual interests.
The strong academic curriculum and service programs at Mount Merici Academy are complemented by a wide array of enrichment opportunities including: Physical Education, Life Sports, after-school athletics (grades 3-8), French classes (K-8), Technology (K-8), Art (Nursery-8), after-school Drama/Theater, Big Buddy Program (K-8), and Science Olympiad (6-8).
