Deacon Roger Normand
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Deacon Roger Normand, who passed away on April 30, 2020. A native of Sanford, Deacon Roger attended Holy Family School in Sanford and graduated as valedictorian from St. Ignatius High School. He then attended St. Francis College in Biddeford (now the University of New England). He earned a master’s degree in French from Boston College and later a master’s degree in pastoral studies from Loyola University in New Orleans.
Deacon Roger taught high school French for 32 years, primarily in New Hampshire. He was ordained to the permanent diaconate in 2004 and ministered in many ways at the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord in Kittery, including visiting many shut-ins and the elderly. For his service, he received the 2014 Msgr. Charles Murphy Deacon of the Year Award.
In addition to his teaching career, he also served as a police officer during the summer months, first in York Beach, York Village, and Wells Beach and later in Kennebunkport as the “officer in the square.” After he retired from the force, he served as police chaplain until 2014. He also served as chaplain for fire departments in North Berwick, Berwick, and South Berwick.
Please pray for the repose of Deacon Roger’s soul and for the consolation of his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Patricia, five children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren, an older sister, and many nieces and nephews.
