Retreat focuses on training and formation for teachers, principals

Teachers and principals from all eight diocesan and parish Catholic schools in Maine gathered at St. Joseph’s College on August 7–8 for a two-day retreat titled “In the Footsteps of Mother Cabrini: Prayer, Mission, and Community.”
The event, organized by the Office of Catholic Schools, marked the unofficial launch of the Mother Cabrini Maine Catholic Education Initiative, a new effort to strengthen Catholic education by proclaiming the Gospel, drawing others to Christ, and building the Reign of God.
Participants were welcomed by Shelly Wheeler, Superintendent of Maine Catholic Schools. Sessions were led by Dr. Daryl Hagan and Dr. Todd Sweda of the Institute for the Transformation of Catholic Education at The Catholic University of America.
Bishop James Ruggieri celebrated Mass each morning in the Healy Chapel. Presentations focused on Mother Cabrini’s legacy of service, the dignity of the human person, and the mission of the Church. Educators also joined small-group discussions on three core themes:
-
Prayer – Helping students grow in their life of prayer.
-
Mission – Guiding students to discover their personal mission and calling.
-
Community – Strengthening relationships within school communities.
Teachers and principals concluded the retreat by setting personal and professional goals for the coming school year, linking their vocation as educators with the mission of the Church.
“They left refreshed and encouraged for the year ahead, eager to bring students closer to Christ and to deepen Christian community within their schools,” said Lisa Nelson, coordinator for mission and ministry for Catholic education. “Let us pray that this retreat bears fruit in the months and years to come. Mother Cabrini, pray for us.”
