Outdoor Palm Sunday Procession Planned in Falmouth
The Parish of the Holy Eucharist will hold a Palm Sunday procession outside Holy Martyrs of North America Church, 266 Foreside Road in Falmouth, on Sunday, March 24, at the beginning of the 10:30 a.m. Palm Sunday Mass.
All who wish to participate are invited to gather outside the church on the Foreside Road side of the church, where the palms will be blessed. There will then be a procession along Foreside Road to Johnson Road and then back through the parking lot and into the church.
Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week, the holiest week of the year for Christian churches. On Palm Sunday, people receive palms in commemoration of Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem, when people "cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road" (MT 21:8).
Another Palm Sunday tradition is the weaving or braiding of palms into crosses and intricate designs. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Westbrook, and St. Matthew Parish in Limerick are among the parishes that are holding palm weaving gatherings.
