Caring Hearts, Full Plates Food Drive benefits Waterville area pantries and soup kitchen
Canned vegetables, cereal, crackers, peanut butter, and soup. They were among the more than 2,000 non-perishable food items donated by members of Corpus Christi Parish in Winslow as part of its Caring Hearts, Full Plates Food Drive.
“We know that because of the pre-Christmas storm, there were many power outages and flooding, which caused our local food pantries and the Lighthouse Soup Kitchen to need additional food and resources,” explained Daniel Spofford, OFS, a member of the St. John the Baptist Secular Franciscan Fraternity, which sponsored the drive.
More than 66 boxes of food were collected and more than $10,000 raised in the drive, which was held from January 21-February 11. The money and food will be distributed to the Waterville Area Soup Kitchen, which operates the Lighthouse, to the St. John the Baptist Food Pantry in Winslow, and to the Winslow Community Cupboard. Both the food pantry and the cupboard in Winslow flooded during the December 18th storm, losing boxes and boxes of food.
