Tenebrae Service in Windham

Monday, March 25 from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM

A Tenebrae service will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Windham on the Monday of Holy Week at 7:30 p.m.

Tenebrae (Latin word meaning “darkness”) is a service that grew out of a combination of night prayer and early morning prayer, with an additional focus on the commemoration of the Passion of our Lord.

One of the most conspicuous features of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. As it gets darker and darker, the community reflects on the great emotional and physical pain that was very real for Jesus during his Passion. It ends with a single light, the reminder that good triumphs over evil.
