Masses planned to pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis

The faithful of the Diocese of Portland join in mourning the loss of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88.

Several parishes around the state of Maine will hold Masses to pray for the repose of the pope's soul, asking the Lord to grant him eternal rest.

Bishop James Ruggieri will celebrate a Mass to which all the clergy and lay faithful of the diocese are invited on Wednesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street in Portland.

Bishop James Ruggieri will celebrate a Mass for the Repose of the soul of Pope Francis on April 23 at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street in Portland. All are encouraged to attend.

Holy Family Parish, Greenville

The Rosary will be prayed for Pope Francis at Holy Family Church, 145 Pritham Avenue in Greenville, on Thursday, April 24, at 7:30 a.m. (before the 8 a.m. Mass) on Friday, April 25, at 9 a.m. (following the 8 a.m. Mass and adoration), and on Sunday, April 27, at 7:30 a.m. (before the 8 a.m. Mass.)

Parish of the Holy Eucharist, Falmouth

A Mass for the intention of Pope Francis will be offered on Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. at Holy Martyrs of North America Church, 266 Foreside Road in Falmouth.

All the churches of the parish will be open Tuesday, April 22, for prayer:

  • Holy Martyrs of North America Church, 266 Foreside Road, Falmouth  - 7:30 am. to 4 p.m.
  • Sacred Heart Church, 326 Main Street, Yarmouth - 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • St. Gregory the Great Church, 24 North Raymond Road, Gray - 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • St. Jude Church, 134 Main Street, Freeport - 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Parish of the Holy Savior, Rumford

A memorial Mass for Pope Francis will be celebrated on Thursday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at St. Athanasius & St. John Church, 126 Maine Avenue in Rumford.

Parish of the Precious Blood, Caribou

A special Mass is not planned. However, all Masses this week will be celebrated for the intention of Pope Francis. A Mass schedule can be found here.

Prince of Peace Parish, Lewiston

Bishop James Ruggieri will celebrate a memorial Mass for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis on Wednesday, April 30, at 6 p.m. at the Basilica of Ss. Peter & Paul in Lewiston.

St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Jackman

The Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed for Pope Francis prior to the Sunday, April 27, 10:30 a.m. Mass at  St. Faustina Church, 370 Main Street in Jackman.

St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, Camden

A Mass for the intention of Pope Francis will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 81 Court Street in Belfast, on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. The Mass will be preceded at 6 p.m. by a Rosary for Pope Francis using Glorious Meditations that the pope wrote.

St. John Vianney Parish, Fort Kent

A Mass to pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis will be celebrated on Monday, April 28, at 6 p.m. at St. Louis Church, 26 East Main Street in Fort Kent.

St. Joseph Parish, Ellsworth

A Mass to pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis will be celebrated on Thursday, May 1, at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, 231 Main Street in Ellsworth.

St. Joseph's College of Maine, Standish

Father Patrick Finn will celebrate a Mass for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis on Tuesday, April 29, at noon in Healy Chapel at the St. Joseph's College of Maine campus, 278 Whites Bridge Road in Standish.

St. Mary of the Visitation Parish, Houlton

A Mass for the intention of Pope Francis will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. at St. Mary of the Visitation Church, 110 Military Street in Houlton.

St. Paul the Apostle Parish, Bangor

A Mass for the intention of Pope Francis will be celebrated on Saturday, April 26, at 9 a.m. at St. John Church, 207 York Street in Bangor.
