Three parishes and Saint Dominic Academy to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring
Three Maine parishes and Saint Dominic Academy students will participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring, a national Super Bowl Sunday effort aimed at tackling hunger.
At the six churches of All Saints Parish in Brunswick, monetary donations will be collected for Catholic Charities Maine’s Relief & Hope Services, which provides assistance to Mainers with urgent needs, such as food, heating, and shelter.
At Corpus Christi Parish, with churches in Waterville and Winslow, donations will be taken up to support a student in El Salvador and the Lighthouse Soup Kitchen in Waterville.
Saint Dominic Academy in Lewiston/Auburn will hold a dress-down day on Friday, February 9. Students are invited to dress in sports-related clothing and to bring in donations of cans of soup, which will be delivered to the St. Mary's Food Pantry in Lewiston.
And at St. John Paul II Parish in Scarborough, which has churches in Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, and South Portland, youth will collect canned goods and monetary donations for the South Portland Food Cupboard.
The Souper Bowl of Caring was started by a youth group in South Carolina in 1990. Since that time, the project has proven to be a winner, with more than $100 million raised for soup kitchens, food banks, and other charities.
