Chrism Mass
"We beseech you, O Lord, that, by the power of your grace, this mingling of fragrance and oil may become for us a sacrament of your blessing."
The Chrism Mass is one of the most solemn and sacred celebrations of the Church year. Celebrated by Bishop Robert Deeley on the Tuesday of Holy Week, it brings together priests, deacons, religious, and parishioners from around the state.
The Mass gets its name from the sacred chrism, which the bishop will bless and consecrate during the Mass, asking God, the Father to "bless and sanctify this oil, so that all who are outwardly anointed with it may be inwardly transformed and come to share in eternal salvation." The sacred chrism will be used through the coming year for baptism, confirmation, and the consecration of altars and churches.
During the Mass, the bishop will also bless the oil of the sick, which is used to anoint the sick, and the oil of catechumens, which is used to anoint individuals preparing for baptism in the Catholic Church. At the end of the Mass, the oils are distributed to representatives of parishes to be used in those sacraments.
“Those oils will be used for anointing, particularly in those sacramental signs that mark us as a people who have received the gifts of God’s Spirit in our lives, baptism, confirmation, holy orders, and anointing of the sick," the bishop said.
Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service
The Chrism Mass is also an expression of the unity of priests with their bishop. Priests from parishes around the state come together, before their bishop, to renew their commitment to priestly service. As they did during their ordinations, they will voice their resolve to be "faithful stewards of the mysteries of God in the Holy Eucharist and the other liturgical rites and to discharge faithfully the sacred office of teaching, following Christ the Head and Shepherd."
The Mass also provides an opportunity for the faithful to offer prayers for their bishop and priests.
Attending the Chrism Mass
The Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 4, at 3 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street in Portland. Due to the popularity of the Mass, those who wish to attend need to contact their parish office, so that a spot may be reserved for them.
Mass of the Oils
Because of the size of the Diocese of Portland, there is a realization that priests and parishioners from northern Maine would have difficulty attending the Chrism Mass. Therefore, on the Wednesday of Holy Week, the bishop travels to northern Maine to celebrate the Mass of the Holy Oils. During the Mass, priests from the northern parishes will renew their promises, and the oils that were blessed the night before at the Chrism Mass will be distributed to priests and representatives of parishes.
In 2023, the Mass of the Oils will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Visitation Church, 110 Military Street in Houlton, on Wednesday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Reservations are not necessary.
