Statement from Bishop James Ruggieri on Maine Law Court Decision
Today, the Maine Law Court invalidated the 2021 law removing the statute of limitations on allegations of past sexual abuse. In the first eight months of my ministry here in the state of Maine, I have made it a priority to understand this matter and engage in discussions on its potential outcomes.
First, I want to reach out to the victims and survivors to acknowledge the impact this past abuse has had on their lives. The reprehensible conduct of certain clergy during that era represents a profoundly painful time that still has effects we all experience today.
A degree of uncertainty still remains, and in the coming days, weeks, and months, in consultation with diocesan, parish, and lay advisors, I will prayerfully assess the path forward for the diocese. I am hopeful that this decision will allow us as a diocese to commit to strengthening the core mission of the Church in Maine with even greater humility and devotion.
As I have learned these past months, for well over 30 years, this diocese has investigated with great care any reports of sexual abuse brought forth. This diocese will continue to dedicate resources to examining every claim regardless of the timeline and providing counseling and support services to those who have come forward.
We as a diocese are committed to the highest standards and protocols of keeping our parishes safe places for our children. We are also committed to maintaining and strengthening the vibrancy of our parish communities and Church ministries which support so many people across the state, Catholic and non-Catholic. We will continue our mission of evangelization and direct service to those in need.
While there may be challenges ahead, I remain hopeful for this beloved diocese and its faithful. I rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us forward.
The Most Reverend James T. Ruggieri
Bishop of Portland
