Sister M. Stella Maris Ware, RSM
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister M. Stella Maris Ware, RSM, 94 (formerly Genevieve Constance) who was called home by the Lord on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at Frances Warde Convent, Portland. Sister Stella Maris had celebrated her 75th jubilee in 2017.
Sister Stella Maris was born in Fairfield in 1923 and was a graduate of Lawrence High School. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1942 from Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Fairfield. Sister studied at Our Lady of Mercy College in Portland, the forerunner of St. Joseph’s College of Maine in Standish.
Sister Stella Maris spent most of her years as a teacher. She taught at St. Edward School in Bar Harbor, St. Mary School in Orono, St. Athanasius School in Rumford, St. Joseph School in Portland, St. Joseph School in Lewiston, Cathedral School in Portland, St. Mary School in Bath, and Sacred Heart School in Portland. She also taught at the Pleasant Point Reservation and had a deep fondness for the children there.
In 1982, Sister Stella Maris retired from teaching and became an assistant in the Motherhouse Infirmary, where she ministered to sisters who were ill.
Sister Stella Maris is survived by a brother, Louis Ware, and his wife, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are as follows:
• Wake/Visitation: Sunday, January 21, 2018, from 3:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. at Conroy-Tully Walker Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, ME
• Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, January 22, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland
• Burial/Committal: Immediately following Mass at New Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland
