Update on St. Dominic Academy

This afternoon, the following message from Bishop Ruggieri was sent to St. Dominic Academy families regarding the move of the pre-k to grade 8 programs to the Auburn campus in January of 2026.
Dear St. Dominic Academy Families-
Last March when I announced the decision to close the high school division of St. Dominic Academy and to consolidate the pre-k to grade 8 programs at the Holy Cross campus in Lewiston, I assured you that the diocese would continue to provide a strong and vibrant Catholic education for your elementary and middle school students. The significant fiscal instability of the high school division (low enrollment, inadequate tuition revenue and insufficient development income) required that we take action to protect the future of the pre-k to grade 8 programs.
Today, I would like to thank you for remaining committed to St. Dominic Academy. Enrollment is robust and has exceeded our projections, particularly for the middle school. I am grateful for your support and flexibility as we prayerfully assessed the best course of action for the coming years. We were unsure about the long-term viability of the Holy Cross campus and began to explore options for facilities for the 2026-2027 academic year, including renovations at the Holy Family property in Lewiston. Given stronger than expected enrollment, it became clear that Holy Family would not be adequate, and the Holy Cross campus will not be able to suitably accommodate St. Dominic Academy for the foreseeable future.
To that end, I, after study and consultation, have made the decision to move the pre-k to grade 8 programs to the Auburn campus of St. Dominic Academy in January 2026. This decision has the full support of the superintendent and the school principal. Although it will unfortunately be a cause of certain inconveniences for all parties involved in St. Dominic Academy, and while it was not the intention to move mid-year, we believe this is the best way for the educational program and your students to thrive. Students will return to school from Christmas break on January 12 – one week later than originally scheduled – to allow more time for the transition from Holy Cross.
To ensure this is fiscally sustainable, the diocese endeavors to enter into long-term lease agreements – initially for athletics facilities – with financially stable external groups. A study is also in process to explore the possibility of beginning a daycare program on the Auburn campus in the fall for children aged six-weeks to three years, a significant need for the community.
Additional information will be shared with families from school leadership regarding details and next steps for this move and beyond.
May God continue to bless you and your families.
Sincerely,
Bishop James T. Ruggieri
