Statement Regarding Canonical Petition

Following much prayer and careful analysis of financial and enrollment trends, Bishop James Ruggieri made the difficult decision to close the high school division of St. Dominic Academy, a decision communicated to the school community on March 28, 2025. The process and ultimate decision followed the proper canonical steps.

The Diocese of Portland has now received a canonical petition pertaining to the closed high school division of St. Dominic Academy from canon lawyers representing Mr. Sean Andrews. Bishop Ruggieri will continue to follow and honor the canonical process as it relates to this petition.*

The pain and sadness of the closure of the high school division remains. In September, the existing St. Dominic Academy’s Pre-K through 8th grade school will open with a projected enrollment of 220 students. The elementary school continues a strong and hopeful presence of Catholic education in the Lewiston/Auburn area.

*Statement modified after receiving clarification from the petitioner's contracted canonical procurator.
