Message from Bishop Ruggieri on the Nation's 250th Anniversary

One Nation Under God

From June 23 to June 26, the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage visited Maine. These were extraordinary days for our diocese and for all who took part. We were blessed to participate in a pilgrimage that began in Florida and will conclude in Philadelphia this weekend as part of the commemoration of our nation’s 250th anniversary.

The pilgrimage’s visit to Maine drew people of many ages and from many communities across our state. Jesus in the Eucharist brought us together here, and through this same pilgrimage, united us with all those journeying from Florida to Philadelphia. In those days of prayer, procession, fellowship, and adoration, I was deeply reminded of the truth we profess as a people of faith: we are one nation under God.

As bishop of this diocese, I was humbled by the visit of the pilgrimage to Maine. To see the faith of so many people, to walk with the Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament, and to witness communities gathered in reverence and prayer was a profound grace. These days reminded us that the Eucharist is not only the source of our unity as Catholics, but also a summons to bring Christ’s peace, mercy, and truth into the life of our nation.

I am grateful to the members of our diocesan organizing committee and to all who assisted at the different pilgrimage sites. I also thank all who came and joined us in worship of the Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament. These days were memorable and filled with grace, and I believe the graces of the pilgrimage will continue to bear fruit in our diocese in the months and years to come.

As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, I urge all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for our country and for greater unity. God has blessed this great experiment in ordered liberty and self-government for these past 250 years. May he continue to pour his blessings upon us. God bless America!
