All Maine parishes will hold a special collection at weekend Masses on September 18-19 to provide assistance to the Church and people of Haiti following a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, which hit the country on August 14, and Hurricane Grace, which arrived just days later. Nearly 2,000 people were killed, 6,000 others injured, and many homes and buildings destroyed. Hundreds of Catholic churches, including the country's Catholic cathedral, were damaged, as were Catholic schools, convents, and rectories.
The proceeds from this special collection will be sent to Cardinal Chibly Langlois, president of the Haitian Bishops' Conference, to be used to support the pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church in Haiti. Money may also be designated to support the efforts of Catholic Relief Services and/or Catholic Charities USA, the official relief agencies of the U.S. Catholic Church, as they work to respond to the needs of the Haitian people.
In addition to the collection that will be taken in parishes, donations made be made online here.
