HOULTON---Next March, youth at St. Mary of the Visitation Parish in Houlton are planning to spend nine days serving children and families living in poverty in El Factor, a coastal town in the María Trinidad Sánchez Province of the Dominican Republic. An experience that will encourage the young people to live a compassionate life in which they strive to help others and share God’s love.
“They will be led by Sister Lisa Valentini, a Missionary Sister of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,” said Clare Desrosiers, the parish catechetical leader at St. Mary of the Visitation. “They will complete various tasks aimed at helping the community thrive. They will also offer Christ-centered arts and crafts activities for hundreds of children. Every day will begin with Mass and will end with prayer and reflection.”
The journey would be unforgettable but, first, the five youth and two adult chaperones must raise half of the trip’s expenses ($5,000) to make it a reality.
“Youth are also available to do leaf raking and clean up this fall in exchange for a donation to the trip,” said Desrosiers.
The group is more than happy to put in the hard work in order to reap the rewards the trip will bring.
“Youth and adults alike will realize that there is much to be learned by opening one’s heart and mind to Jesus’ Sacred Heart, present among the poor,” said Desrosiers.
