Responding generously to the needs of many in the community who are not as fortunate, volunteers at several Maine churches will gather together to provide free Thanksgiving dinners in praise of the wonderful gifts that God has bestowed.
All of the events below will be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 22:
Parishioners and volunteers at St. Francis of Assisi Church will serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal from noon to 2 p.m. at the church located on 81 Court Street in Belfast. All are invited to attend the free dinner, especially those who might be alone for the holiday. The dinner will be provided by the church’s Social Peace and Justice Committee and the Knights of Columbus. To offer financial assistance or to serve at the dinner, call (207) 233-0787.
St. Mary of the Visitation Parish will host a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner in the parish hall at 112 Military Street in Houlton. All who want to share in a holiday meal are invited, whether it’s because someone doesn't want to cook a big meal, lives alone, or is struggling financially. The dinner will be served from noon to 2 p.m. If you are interested in helping out or making a donation, call the parish office at (207) 532-2871 from Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon. In addition, St. Mary of the Visitation will host an ecumenical Thanksgiving service at noon on Tuesday, November 20. A goodwill offering will be held at the service to benefit the Salvation Army Fuel Assistance Program and local food pantries. Financial donations and nonperishable food items will be gratefully accepted.
St. Martha Church, located on 30 Portland Road, will host the 20th annual Project Pilgrim, a complimentary Thanksgiving Day dinner for community members to come together and share in delicious food with their friends and neighbors. Guests can stop by St. Martha from noon to 1:30 p.m. or call ahead and arrange to pick up a meal or have one delivered to their home. Transportation to and from the event is also provided. St. Catherine of Sienna Church will host a free Thanksgiving Day dinner in the parish hall of St. Catherine of Sienna, located on 32 Paris Street in Norway. Area residents are invited to gather for the dinner which will begin at noon. To make reservations to attend, contact the parish office at (207) 743-2606 or sign up on the sheets located in the narthex of St. Catherine of Sienna or Our Lady of Ransom Church in Mechanic Falls. There are also sign-up sheets for item donations and volunteer shifts.
Good Shepherd Parish and the Knights of Columbus will host the 20th annual Free Thanksgiving Dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hall of Most Holy Trinity Church, located on 271 Main Street in Saco. All members of the community are invited to attend. A turkey dinner with all the fixings, including dessert and beverages, will be served. Free takeout and delivery are available on Thanksgiving Day. If you can help with the dinner preparations, packing or delivering meals, working in the kitchen, or serving on the cleanup crew, please call Ray at (207) 282-9288. Donations of turkeys are being accepted now, and donations of pies can be taken to the church hall on Wednesday, November 21.
A free Thanksgiving Day dinner will be offered in the hall of St. Francis Xavier Church, located on 130 Route 133 in Winthrop. Area residents in need are invited to join their neighbors and fellow community members at the dinner which will run from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. All are welcome at the event which is organized by the Winthrop Rotary.
