PORTLAND---St. James School in Biddeford and St. Thomas School in Sanford have received institutional accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The accreditation was made official at the association’s Board of Trustees meeting in February.
NEASC accreditation is structured in a self-study report featuring input from the entire school community as well as a peer review which is completed by a visiting committee of education professionals and experts.
During the accreditation process at St. James and St. Thomas, the visiting committee commended both schools on their self-study reports that were “an honest reflection of where a strong school is now and where it wants to be.” The schools were also lauded for their community service, commitment to students, implementation of differentiated learning practices, STREAM initiatives, and enrichment programs.
“We are thrilled to receive this news as it reaffirms what we already knew about our school,” said Nancy Naimey, principal of St. James. “The visiting committee observed our students truly embodying our mission of being a community of scholarship, faith, and service. It’s a proud day for St. James and the wonderful teachers, students, and school families that work to make it a special place.”
“St. Thomas was the first Catholic school in the diocese to earn accreditation in 2007 and I believe that the student experience has only improved in the last decade,” said Donna Jacques, principal of St. Thomas. “St. Thomas School is where faith and education meet, and the NEASC commended the school for living that mission. I think the results speak volumes about the quality and future of Catholic education.”
“The diocese congratulates St. James and St. Thomas for their significant achievements and the great contributions they make to the Church and the community,” said Bishop Robert P. Deeley. “The purpose of our schools is to educate the whole person of the children who participate in these centers of educational excellence. St. James and St. Thomas Schools successfully help our young people to see the incredible gifts they possess and the responsibility they have to share those gifts with others. Our Catholic schools, students, and dedicated staff members truly bring hope to our world.”
