BIDDEFORD---All married couples, particularly those celebrating milestone anniversaries, are invited to receive a special blessing from Bishop Robert P. Deeley at the Silver & Gold Mass on Saturday, June 22, at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, located on 178 Elm Street in Biddeford. A reception will follow in the church hall.
The annual Mass is a testimony to the goodness of marriage and the blessings it can bring. It is an opportunity to thank God for graces given and to ask for the continuing gift of grace to persevere in the commitments that have been made. During the Mass, each husband and wife will turn to each other and hold each other’s hands while the bishop prays over them and invokes the Lord’s blessing on their marriages.
The Silver & Gold Mass celebrates the joy of Christian marriage and is especially intended for those celebrating milestone anniversaries, such as their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 35th, 40th, 50th, or beyond.
At the 2018 Silver & Gold Mass in Presque Isle, five of the attending couples were celebrating 65 years or more of marriage. In addition to Presque Isle, the bishop has celebrated the annual Silver & Gold Mass in Bangor (2017), Augusta (2016), and Lewiston (2015).
“The love of marriage is more, much more than the feeling, the affection, which brings couples together, even though those realities are part of it,” said Bishop Deeley. “It is the commitment that they make to each other. Love is the sacrifice they make for each other. Love is the will they have that only good be in the life of the one loved.”
During the Mass, prayers will also be offered for those who are widowed, divorced, separated, or single, and that the Catholic community be a source of hospitality and support for them.
