“Box of Joy” Program in Skowhegan Enjoys Best Year Ever; Over 140 Boxes of Goods Donated

SKOWHEGAN---In 2016, Elyse Wilson of Christ the King Parish in Skowhegan read a short notice about a program called “Box of Joy,” which helps provide boxes full of gifts to mission children in South America who have never received Christmas presents before.

The decision to bring the program to Skowhegan has inspired generosity from parishioners and community members alike, and generated success that would have been unimaginable that day.

“This was the best year yet,” said Wilson. “Over 140 boxes were donated, and quite a few people said they want to get more involved next year, so I anticipate it’s going to grow.”

The boxes are full of toys, hygiene items, and school supplies, and are now on a journey to bring Christmas cheer to people the donors will never meet.

“It’s not only good for the kids receiving the boxes, it also really energizes the people who donate,” said Wilson. “Participants have said they think it’s a wonderful way to share the love of Christ and the true meaning of Christmas.”
